Introduction to Convertkit and Terminology
Convertkit is an email marketing software that gives you the tools to build an email list and to send emails - both one off “broadcasts” and ongoing automated sequences to the people on said list. I’ve been a Convertkit user for years now and I absolutely love it, but it is true that if you’re new to email marketing, or the Convertkit platform, some of the terms might be a little confusing - so for a full overview of Convertkit terminology check out this post first, then hop back here as we go step by step through the different parts of the platform and how to use them.
Opt in Forms on Convertkit
First up, I’m going to walk you through how to use opt in forms on Convertkit - most specifically how to create an opt in form and embed it on your Squarespace Website.
What’s an opt in form you ask? Well - it’s essentially a form that someone fills in on your website to “opt in” to your email list (usually in return for them receiving a freebie of some kind.

Sending a Freebie from your Opt in Form on Convertkit

Sending a one time email using the broadcast function in Convertkit
One of the things you’ll want to do as soon as you have more than just your Mom on your email list is start sending some form of newsletter. Here’s your nudge not to wait until you have a thousand subscribers and then you have to sneak into their inbox after being silent for months! Instead, get into a rhythm of sending regular newsletter style emails weekly, or fortnightly, or even monthly!

How to send email sequences using convertkit
Now another type of email you might want to send is a sequence that starts for different subscribers at different times. For example, if someone downloads a freebie, you might want to send a follow up email a couple of days after they downloaded the freebie to check in and provide another useful resource, and then a week later to check in again and offer a paid for product or service that relates to said freebie. This can also be called an “Evergreen Sequence”

Using Tags & Segments in Convertkit
One of the things you’re almost certainly gonna wanna do over time is to send an email just to one section of your audience - a great way to do this is to use tags and segments so that you can split your list by, for example, things they’re interested in, or which freebies they’ve downloaded or which course they purchased and when.
